Social cricket in a village green setting is very well established in the verdant hills of Romsey. From October until May, corporate and private groups indulge in the gently active folly of social cricket. Whether playing seriously or purely for pleasure, cricket is a great social sport. When combined with fine Country House cooking and excellent wines, there is little to compare.
The traditional cricket pavilion is built over the sparkling wine cellar, iceberg roses replace painted pickets, and English plane trees provide shade.
Play is usually a couple of hours between morning tea and lunch, and a slightly longer spell in the afternoon with a break for tea.
The creatively presented lunch and afternoon tea varies throughout the seasons and is served in the pavilion or Glenfern room according to the weather.
Conference groups regularly take a couple of hours off from a busy schedule to unwind to the click of leather on willow. A glass or two of wine, a setting sun, shadows stretching sinuously across the oval and a pervading background of silence.
It's a nice place to be.
